She has a very strong grasp of the letters and their sounds and is able to work her way through sounding out some words. She is very excited to be able to look at a book and see more than just letters jumbled on the page.

May Book of the Month: Ten Things I Can Do To Help My World

May 1st, 2009

Author: Melanie Walsh

Ten Things I Can Do To Help My WorldEveryone seems to be Earth-conscious these days, and it has become en vogue to be “green.” I recently saw a t-shirt that said, “Love your Mother.” On it was a picture of Earth, implying not your birth mother, but something larger—Mother Earth. I found this to be particularly profound.

In honor of Earth Day, Pre K Scholars is featuring a wonderful book that sends the same message. Ten Things I Can Do To Help My World, written by Melanie Walsh, creatively embraces finding fun and easy ways to be eco-friendly all because, “we love our world.” The book cleverly depicts ways in which we can protect our world; the pages it’s printed on are made from 100% recycled material. One page demonstrates how children can “use both sides of the paper,” and that “if everybody did this, it would greatly reduce the number of trees we use to make paper.”

From water to paper to electricity, this book shares conservation tips with young readers in an inspirational way that they can relate to. The pages are non traditional and flaplike with text wrapping around an eclectic mix of illustrations, grabbing the reader’s curiosity to experience what’s next. The author did an amazing job of providing youngsters with personal examples of cause and effect and exemplifying simple ways in which they can individually make a difference in protecting our environment. A must read for youngsters of a “green” generation!
