Creative Ways To Prepare Your Child For Kindergarten!

She has a very strong grasp of the letters and their sounds and is able to work her way through sounding out some words. She is very excited to be able to look at a book and see more than just letters jumbled on the page.

March Book of the Month: Discovering Nature’s Alphabet

March 1st, 2009

Authors: Krystina Castelle and Brian Boyl

Discovering Nature's AlphabetPre K Scholars firmly believes that we all need to take advantage of the teaching opportunities that surround us. We also believe that learning is an active process that can be fun and exciting!

Discovering Nature’s Alphabet is a very creative depiction of the alphabet. Krystina Castella and Brian Boyl, the authors of this book, even write an introduction encouraging their readers to go on a “playful adventure” of looking at the world around them in search of letters of the alphabet. Through their search for letters they hope the viewer will experience nature’s repetition, patterns, shapes, colors and advise paying attention to scale, line, shape, texture etc. all the while. They say that it was on a hike that they created a game of finding letters among the natural beauty that surrounded them. They discovered a tree that looked like the letter Y. They photographed it and set out to find all 26 letters of the alphabet created by nature. Their book is a compilation of their photographed findings.

In Discovering Nature’s Alphabet, you will see different original photographs of nature for all 26 letters. For example, coral on a lava rock beach in Maui, Hawaii for the letter C and bamboo from San Marino, California in the shape of the letter N.

It’s a beautiful book and the authors’ ability to exemplify how we all can broaden our perception of how we see the world around us is unique and creative. Afterall, who doesn’t love an “I Spy” game, especially if it is within our personal surroundings? What a terrific way to bring the alphabet to life!
